As you probably guessed from the subject line, I live in Hawaii. I grew up in Michigan and worked as a newspaper reporter in South Florida before I moved to the islands in 1972. Yes, I'm an old guy (63.)

I have three published fiction books -- two novels and a short story collection. I went POD because I couldn't get any big publisher or literary agent to even read my work (the snobs!)

In 2004 I won a first-place award from the Society of Professional Journalists for my magazine article about five fishermen who vanished when their small boat was caught in a storm off the island of Maui.

I'm retired now, but I still write fiction, essays, memoirs, etc. I live in Honolulu, the only big city in Hawaii. For fun I hike in the rainforest and go snorkeling and spearfishing in the ocean. I use to body surf, but my I quit after I nearly drowned a few times.

Personal facts: Air Force veteran, divorced, very picky reader, homebrewer of beer. I spend a lot of time online or watching old movies on cable TV (insomniac.)

Favorite authors: Henry David Thoreau, Friedrich Nietzsche, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, D. H. Lawrence, W. Somerset Maugham, J. D. Salinger, Albert Camus, Richard Brautigan, Hunter Thompson.

Funniest book I ever read: "The Ginger Man" by J. P. Donleavy.

Welcome to the forum, starrwriter. You might want to put a signature in (with website, name or whatever) so we can check out your works. We are a friendly bunch, and I think you will enjoy being a member.

My sister lived in Hawaii for 20 years. I still have a niece living there.

Welcome to the forum. Unfortunately, my time spent in Hawai'i was all too brief, passing through several times while on an aircraft carrier. Always wanted to go back, see the rain forest, walk along the beach, and climb Olomana and a few other peaks.

Nice meeting you here on the forum.
