Are there any publishers on this forum? I would be interested in hearing some of your thoughts on issues from a publishers viewpoint.

They're not allowed, because if they were here we couldn't talk trash about them.

I dunno, Lin, that may not be a problem. We all love publishers, I mean, don't we? :-)

This is another frustrating conundrum of self-publishing. Like being self employed. How to bitch about the boss when it's you?

Ummm ... isn't blackrosewriting a publisher/author? And AidanaWillowRaven is an illustrator/agent. I think this is a very mixed group. It helps keep a certain balance, I believe.

Personally, I'd go with E-Book Time, LLC. Of course my view would be biased, because they're the only publisher I have had any experience with, but the company did give me good service. Their publication prices start at $395 (although they are currently running a sale that reduces the price to $345, but that won't be forever, I don't think). Their web site is www.e-booktime.com

Excuse me, Gordon, and please don't take this negatively, because I'm just curious. But you paid $395 dollars to publish an ebook?

I have a hard time understanding that because an ebook is essentially free to produce.

The main hangup on publishing is having to buy ten ISBN's to get started, but the total cost of doing that is under $390.

And that's if you want an ISBN. If I was going to produce an ebook, I'd just do one and put it up for sale with no ISBN.

So I guess I'm wondering what you paid for there. Maybe I don't understand what and all is involved in this process. Editing, perhaps?

Thanks

E-booktime:

Quote:

  • Paperback $395 $345
  • Hardcover and paperback $695 $545
  • Sold by Amazon.com, Borders.com,
    BarnesandNoble.com and others
  • Five free copies
  • You keep all rights
  • Discounted book price for authors
  • Printed manuscripts accepted

  • Ready in 4-6 weeks.
  • Rush service available
  • Excellent royalty rates
    30% from our store (paperback)
    15% from others (paperback)
  • ISBN assigned to print books
  • Copyright registration service

We incorporated in January of 2002 and began operations a few months later specializing in ebook publishing. In May of 2004 we expanded into print on demand publishing of paperback and hardback books. E-BookTime, LLC is located in Montgomery, Alabama.

We strive to provide authors an affordable and easy alternative to the large traditional publishers who generally accept material only through a literary agent and are very selective about whom they publish. Being published by one of the large publishers is simply not going to happen for most authors for any of a number of reasons. Our goal at E-BookTime is to give those authors a chance to see their work published quickly, easily and at minimal cost.

Thanks for posting that here, Shelagh.
Gordon, I like the pricing of it as well. $10.95 is not too bad for a paperback. The posted review is also good. Congratulations on that. Did the pub do the cover design?

Also, do they do e-books? I don't find that on their site.

Well, although the company is called E-Book Time, they don't actually publish e-books. They publish paperbacks and hardcovers. I think the company got that name, because they started out by publishing e-books several years ago, but they have since moved on to actual physical books. As for my cover, The tan background is a stock cover (you can see the stock covers under the covers section of their web site). The picture of the Orb on the cover I made myself. I got a purple glass sphere and set it atop a hole in a cardboard box. I put a light in the cardboard box and shut off all the other lights in the room, so that the light from the sphere was the only light. I then photographed it with a digital camera. If one looks at the picture very carefully, one may be able to see the weve of a piece of purple fabric I placed behind the orb to further inhance the color. The letter A and arrows were added on the computer (they're suppose to represent the mark of Lord Aiitron, which you will read about if you read the book). I also wrote the author bio and back cover discription myself. I used my avatar as my author photo on the back cover as well. Of Orbs and Lords was reviewed by bookreview.com and that review can be read on bookreview's site, amazon.com, my authorsden page, and under the reviews section of this web site. I think the review was quite good, bearing in mind that Of Orbs and Lords was my very first attempt at actually writing a book.
For more about Of Orbs and Lords, read the plot summary I've posted under the books section of this web site, on my authorsden page, and on my booksie page. As for the prices of the books E-Book Time publishes, it depends on the page count. To see the pricing information for paperbacks, click on the paperback info tab on their web site. Here's a few of their prices I remember.
48-107 pages = $8.95
108-150 pages = $10.95 (Of Orbs and Lords is 135)
151-200 pages = $12.95
201-250 pages = $14.95
Their hard cover prices are significantly more expensive, but they can be seen under the hardcover info section of the web site. Ihe basic publishing price includes listings on many online book sites and inclusion in the Ingram catalog as well as an ISBN. Additional optional fees include $125 to take care of copyright registration, $50 to get an LCCN, and $5 per image to include pictures in the interior of the book (pictures on the cover are free). I hope I've provided you with enough info. Very Happy

Thank you. I did see one of their books offered as an e-book, but it may have been from earlier and still be offered that way. I was impressed by the royalty figures and paperback pricing. How have your sales been, if I may be so bold as to ask. I'm just curious, so you really don't need to answer if you'd rather not.

Yes... Black Rose Writing is a publishing house. We have a direct contract with Lightning Source, Inc. We never, ever receive any monies or fees from our authors, and we use our income from books sold to advertise and promote, putting our profits right back into our company and authors.

Please visit the site for more info or e-mail any direct questions? Thanks!
