Author Terry Fallis' The Best Laid Plans from AuthorHouse has won the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humor.

Nice to know we can dream even within the POD arena. Here's a link which will (hopefully) be good for a few days at least:

It's nice to see a POD book winning an award. I'd like to see one get on the New York Times bestseller list. That's probably highly unlikely, but if it did happen, it would get many more people intrested in POD books (hopefully). A POD bestseller or two might just be what is needed to get people (in general) interested in POD books. Smile

Also note: he released podcasts of chapters every week from his website.

Similarly, in the newsletter I posted on the Chatter Box board, Jeff Rivera placed a pdf file on his website of the entire book that he self-published. He sold a thousand copies of the book but the pdf file was downloaded several thousand times.

Giving away free electronic copies is the equivalent of selling hard copies to libraries. To build a fan base, you have to encourage folks to read the novel first and buy the novel later.

Great article, Malcolm. It does tend to give one hope. There are some good points in these comments, as well as the ones attached to the article. I lilke the ideas on building a reader base, especially if one is intending to do sequels and the like.

Now, let's take aim at that NYT bestseller list.

That's a lot less likely.

It's easy to get the impression around the internet ghetto that amazon.com is the big book seller around. Actually, it's a tiny percentage. The 900 pound gorilla in American book sales is...get ready to get depressed...Walmart.

Not exactly a bastion of small and/or self publishers.

I don't see much literary fiction at Wal*Mart, so I'm seldom in their book department. My impression is that they tell publishers what they want and the writers deliver--or else. One can see where Amazon got the idea to also become a monopoly.
