| Subject: Choosing a Genre' Mon Jun 02, 2008 10:44 pm | |
| A new post in the "Events" forum brought to mind a continuing problem I have - choosing a genre' for my books. I have been placing them in Historical Fiction, which is more or less correct, but both Keechie and the sequel/prequel, Granny Boo, are so much more than that. They could both be called Adventure, Native American, or several other sub-genres or combinations, but that is rarely a choice.
I found that some potential buyers began their book search by genre before author, so getting our books in the right category to begin with is surely a marketing issue.
Some writers have no problem with genre selection, but leave it to me to be a cross-genre writer. It seems the best decision would be to choose the one that has the largest target audience.
I must admit a funny story about one accidental customer I had who searched Amazon by author. She was looking for something new by Whitley Streiber. Somehow, she clicked on "Search" before typing in the last name, Streiber, and my listing for Keechie came up. She hit the "Buy" button and voila, I had a sale! She was nice enough to email me and tell me her story, and that she thoroughly enjoyed Keechie anyway. Since I am also a Whitley Streiber fan, we had several really good emails afterwards. _________________ Brew My website:http://www.philwhitley.com "Let us dare to read, think, speak and write." ~ John Adams, 1765 |
