It seems that what once was touted as the American dream is deteriorating into the American nightmare. The founders must be rolling over in their graves.
To build on Abe's comment, doing what's right isn't the same as easy; it's simply doing what's right.
As long as we all understand that what I think is right is what's right...and that what someone else thinks is right might not be right...hmm...I bet this kind of thinking is what got us in this mess in the first place. Right? Shocked

To add to the general input to The Fan, Obama's pastor just trotted out on the world stage and not only became a new spokesman for racism and insanity, but said that whatever Obama says isn't true that the kid actually believes in stuff like white people creating AIDS to kill of blacks.

This has got to be the single biggest shot at the Obama campaign and it didn't come from nutso McCain or Bitchary...it came from his PASTOR! The first black man with a shot at a presidential nomination and he gets torpedoed by a trusted spirtual advisor.

Is it safe to assume that everyone knows that it is our actions that have caused the prices of oil to skyrocket? And that it is our continued actions, implied or threatened, that will keep the prices moving up. The invasion of Iraq and the plummeting dollar was just the beginning.

The OPEC oil minister talked today about just that. The continued threat of an Iran invasion, and now the latest air maneuvers by Israel has added to the uncertainty. It is felt that the US may be working behind the scenes to support an Israeli-led attack on Iran. That of course would be disastrous.

It shouldn't be okay for a lame duck to start a war.

It's obviously HUGELY in the GOP's favor to do so. Then we'd need a "wartime president" and the choices are a war hero and a skinny lawyer.

Congress should resolve not to commit to any new wars until the administration changes. Is Iran going to mess up any worse in the next 5 months?

The title of this thread, "It's A Mess," must include the disaster in the financial markets. Irresponsible actions are causing the entire world to suffer. A quick fix just won't do. Throwing billions of borrowed money at the problem without the proper safeguards will be putting more money in the toilet.
Enough is enough should be the cry of us all. Enough irresponsible use of tax payers money. Those who caused the problem should be the ones who are forced to pay. The executives who obtained millions of perk bonus money by irresponsible actions should be required to pay it all back, but that most likely won't happen. What happened can't be undone. One can't "unfry" an egg. We can't bring back to life all those lost in a stupid war, either. That's why we must be careful who governs. Who shoots from the hip and who will use discretion and caution before actions are taken. The world looks to us for guidance and we have failed miserably. Whether or not we can regain confidence will depend on what we do now. That also applies to the upcoming elections.

I just read through this whole thread, and the mess got worse since it began.

We are experiencing a complete lack of trust in our leaders, in our system. Greed has fueled this mess. I believe those who caused this mess will go down with it, but so will many others who are innocent and have lived their lives trying to do what they believe morally, ethically, and spiritually is the right thing. And in a nation of democracy and freedom there are certainly opinions of what is the "right thing."

My husband and I have wondered if those in university business programs are required to take ethics. As a social worker, to get my license renewed every two years I am required to take an ethics course.

Tony Hillerman's latest book, The Shape Shifters, does a wonderful job of explaining the Navajo outlook on greed. Look it up if you can. It is too bad everyone - including some Navajos - can't follow the tribe's beliefs regarding that and many other things.

For someone who doesn't want to be here, you keep popping up.

How can any veteran forget who makes up the military? A veteran also knows that he takes an oath to obey orders. I have never read anything about exceptions. Deciding whether to obey or not to obey orders is not an option without penalty. One can disobey but must be willing to accept the consequences.
