why am i paying tax to the US government on my advance?

hi

this is my first post. i have my advance from mcGraw hill an american company and it has 30% "federal tax" taken off it!

i don't remember reading any thing about that in the contract and i wasn't expecting it since i live in England.

Hello Monster

I'm English now resident in the US and live in Texas which some locals
call Taxus and similar similies are applied to many states, whilst I'm
not too knowledgable on the subject probably because you got paid from
the US the government and states have sticky fingers for virtually
taxing everything they can get their grubby little fingers on!

I think its whats called a withholding tax from the federal government on all moneys raised by foriegn nationals in the USA.

I would suggest you contact your publisher and/or the US Internal Revenue Service about this. Since the publisher is in the US, it is probably subject to taxation. However, you will most likely get it back. What a pain for you, to have this come unexpectedly.

Using a Google search with words like "IRS withholding foreign nationals" etc. shows that income earned from a U.S. source (your publisher) is taxable within the U.S. There may be exceptions to this.

There are also negotiated tax treaties between the U.S. and other countries to ensure that earnings won't be taxed twice, that is within the U.S. and within the countries of residence.

BUT, if you are an American citizen you owe tax on money you make in other countries.

They get you coming and going...maybe even twice.
