I love to hear about how other writers work. Fascinating!

I'm a fit-and-start kind of gal. When I am on a roll, I put in about 1500 words a day. Most novels take me about three to four months to the rough draft stage. As soon as a scene reveals itself, I try to capture it. I dream about the book. I think about it in the shower. The trick is finding time between work, obligations to family, and sleep. Somehow, it all gets done.

When I'm not actively writing, I take time to edit on a previous work.

All of this takes my mind off wondering about the two novels my agent is shopping around. I can obcess, given a slight opportunity.

My writing speed depends on whether or not I'm on deadline, but as an average, I shoot for 2,000-2,500 words a day, 5-6 days a week. I generally get to the desk about 7:30 or 8 am, work till lunch, then again until about 5. Of course, much of that time is also wasted online...I mean, spent constructively on sites like this!

Ah Jeff, at least you're honest about the online time!

My office (if you want to call it that) is in the living room about 10 feet from my hubby's t.v. set. When he is not in the house I get a lot done. When he is around (whether watching t.v. or not) I get nothing done. He stands over my shoulder, expects me to clean house, have to make meals, and drive him where he wants to go. The phone rings, the dogs bark, and the cat keeps sneezing. Amidst all this I must write.

I have found that if I write before I ever go downstairs when I wake up in the morning, I get a lot done. However, sometimes I don't get downstairs for maybe 3 hours. *grin* That doesn't go over too well either.

So, I have set 4 hours a day to write. Three-quarters of an hour to write, 15 minutes to get the stiffness out and get drinks, etc. , and then back to writing. I also wear a hard hat to let hubby know I am working and am NOT to be bothered. I also only work 5 days a week. I chose the days and they are not always the same days.

I have no trouble writing. In fact once I start I don't want to stop. That is why I don't journal because that is all that I would do all day is write.

My major problem with getting things written when I am downstairs is the marketing and promoting of my current book. If I don't do anything with that then I am free to write. So which is most important?
