Emma Barnes, Small Publisher of the Year 2006, in an interview wih rosyb of Vulpes Libris said:

Making a living from a single, small press book is going to be very hard. Making a living as a writer - now that is a different story. You have to have multiple streams of revenue coming in to do it, but it is possible to be a "full time" writer and not be published by one of the six mega-conglomerates.

Geroge,

My hopes are currently resting with Mary Seymour of the Seymour Agency, New York. She requested a partial, which she returned suggesting a few changes, which I've made and have now resubmitted to her. (Jan 24th) In the meantime, I've also submitted a query to an Edinburgh agent, as the book has a Scottish theme.

I've saved my rejection letters so that I can have a big bonfire one day...not that I look forward to getting them, but I figure that you always need a little paper to get the kindling going...

I just now noticed this comment from many months ago, and started thinking, well, isn't it risky keeping all those rejection slips in the house?

There rather like germs, aren't they? Likely to spread, potentially infecting manuscripts that used to be perfect, but start coming down with typos and continuity problems that weren't there the last time you looked at them.

I take precautions! I throw the rejection slips away immediately and then vow never to read anything from that publisher again.

P.S. Shelagh, that was an interesting article. The one question I wish hed been asked was this: How do small publishers who only come out with a handful of titles a year manage to stay in business at all? Some small presses have such a low profile, I wonder if they ever make any sales. And even if each book in that handful were to sell 5,000 copies, that's not enough income to run a business.
